What Is WooCommerce?

WooCommerce is an eCommerce plugin which is used by the open-source content management system WordPress. It is a free plugin that turns a regular WordPress site into an eCommerce site.

WooCommerce is by far the most popular eCommerce plugin for WordPress and has over 80 million downloads to date. Although it is free, there are numerous paid-for optional extensions that add to the capabilities of the core plugin.

How WooCommerce Is Used to Build eCommerce Stores

WooCommerce allows WordPress site owners to create product pages, which can in turn be assigned to different categories and have various tags and attributes applied to them. It also enables the creation of collection pages where groups of products that share a certain field are listed and can be filtered through. WooCommerce also features dozens of free payment integrations that enable stores to link with their chosen payment methods.

We have decades of experience working with WordPress stores that use WooCommerce and offer a complete WooCommerce service for our customers.

WooCommerce extends the SEO-friendliness of WordPress to eCommerce and enables the store owner to adjust and optimize many different areas that affect SEO. This includes the body content of product and collection pages, url handles, images and much more.

There are also a number of SEO-enhancing plugins that can be used in combination with WooCommerce to improve SEO further. These include a whole host of website performance boosting plugins, as well as others to help with your technical and on-page SEO. Yoast SEO is such a plugin and one of the most trusted to help WordPress sites boost their SEO. In fact, Yoast SEO has been downloaded more than 370 million times showing how popular it is with the WordPress community.

WooCommerce vs Shopify SEO

As mentioned in the last section, optimizing for SEO using WooCommerce can be tricky. While there is the potential to edit multiple different facets of your site and, frankly, optimize your website to a greater degree than Shopify, for those not well versed in SEO Shopify is certainly an easier platform to use.

To get the most from WooCommerce SEO, it is important that you have somebody that understands what they’re doing and what is needed to make sure all the possible improvements are implemented. This is because Shopify acts as an out-of-the-box solution and handles a lot of the technical SEO for you. That’s not to say optimizing Shopify for SEO is easy, but the basics are covered.

If you need help navigating the world of SEO on your WooCommerce store, don’t hesitate to get in touch. We’ve worked with dozens of businesses that use WooCommerce effectively as their eCommerce solution, and there’s no reason why your site can’t get the most out of it too.

Could Shopify Be The Answer?

On the other hand, if you wish to switch to Shopify or already use Shopify as your website platform, we are also very experienced in growing Shopify stores too. WooCommerce SEO Tips

If you’re looking for some quick tips to enhance SEO using WooCommerce, take a look at the following for our recommendations:

Content is King – this applies not just for WooCommerce, but SEO in general. If you want to outrank your competitors on the SERPs, having better content than them is the number one thing you can do to give you a chance. Sure, if you’re trying to outrank a powerhouse then you may be in for a tough fight, especially without the budget to acquire backlinks. However, having inferior content means that you’re not going to even have a chance. Take a look at the pages that rank on page one for your given keyword and then make content that’s longer, more informative, more engaging, and more relevant than theirs. If you’re doing this on a product page, go ahead and go to town on the product description! Even put some additional product and lifestyle images for good measure. Why not record a video of you using the product? The possibilities for content creation are endless.

Install Yoast SEO – among its many tools and benefits, Yoast SEO allows you to easily assign the meta title and meta description to any page on your site, including the ones created using WooCommerce. If you do not write a unique meta title and description for a product or collection page on your site, you are very unlikely to be able to generate traffic to your website. Make sure you do this and write an enticing meta title and description to get people to click through to your store! Just remember, make sure you put the keyword you’re trying to rank for at the start of your meta title and include it somewhere in your meta description!

Use Categories and Tags Effectively – by categorizing and tagging your products effectively, you are able to organise your store in a powerful way, not just for users but for search engines too. Each category and tag has its very own unique page in WordPress which is crawled by search engine crawlers in order to determine what kind of content is on a page and, most importantly, what keyword that page should be ranking for. Remember, categories are used to group broad sets of products like “computers” or “televisions” in an online electrical store. On the other hand, tags are more specific and can break down categories even further with terms such as “desktop” or “laptop” for the computers category.

WooCommerce SEO FAQs

WooCommerce is a very good option for SEO, especially when coupled with some key add-ons and plugins to enhance its SEO-friendliness further. It can be a little tricky to access all the potential SEO customisations as some require a little technical understanding, but out of the box even for a beginner there are lots of things that can be done with WooCommerce to optimize SEO and get you climbing those search rankings.

Aside from all the usual stuff you would expect to be able to do, such as input body text, images, featured images, meta titles and meta descriptions (this will be much easier with a plugin such as Yoast or All In One SEO!) WooCommerce and WordPress in general allows for a lot of customisability which other platforms lack. For instance, within WooCommerce and WordPress you are able to customise your URL structure to however you want. This can help you indicate to Google the real structure of your website and provide it an insight as to the type of content on the page, allowing it to rank your page for a more appropriate keyword.

WordPress is also able to offer structured data support, providing you with the opportunity to have rich snippets feature on SERPs. This can be great for SEO and specifically click through rate (the percentage of people who view your search engine results and click through to the page) as it makes your listing altogether more enticing to click on.

Yoast SEO plugin for WooCommerce is, in our opinion, the best plugin for WooCommerce. Although there are numerous excellent plugins out there that can optimize your WooCommerce site in a number of different ways, Yoast SEO provides a whole host of tools and benefits straight out of the box and is loved by experienced SEO experts and newbies alike.

If you are looking to develop a WooCommerce store, we always would recommend installing at least the free version of Yoast SEO so that you can edit your page’s meta titles and descriptions, sitemaps, robots.txt file and much more.

There is so much you can do to enhance your WooCommerce store’s SEO, but there are a couple of things that we would recommend doing as a bare minimum:

  • Create great content for your pages
  • Write and optimize all meta titles and descriptions for key landing pages (and all other pages on your website if you can)

If you are to do only two things, we would recommend doing these. Creating better content than your competitors for a given keyword is a great place to start in the mission to outrank them. Optimizing your meta titles and descriptions for these pages not only boost your SEO rank, but also make it more likely for people to click on your listing in the SERPs and get to that great content you want them to read.
